There is so much to be excited about around the continued growth of curling in the United States. But one recent development in particular stands out, the opening of the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club. Countless passionate and dedicated curlers have worked for years to realize a dream of bringing dedicated ice to the Bay Area. A site was identified, construction plans developed, and funds were raised. And just as everything was falling into place, a global pandemic arrived to create further challenges and frustrations. But undeterred, the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club persevered, and after years of hard work they can be so very proud of their new dedicated ice in Oakland. "We are thrilled to open our dedicated ice facility in East Oakland, the only such one in Northern California” said Alex Baxter, Board President. “Building our new club has been a labor of love—difficult but rewarding. We are grateful for the myriad of ways that the curling community, near and far, has shown up to be part of this success. In our first month we have already introduced curling to hundreds of people, begun league play, and grown our membership among the diverse communities of California. The Golden Gate Bonspiel will be back soon! We invite all curlers to stop by and take a slide—this is your home in the Bay Area."
The beautiful five sheet facility will be home to vibrant leagues, exciting bonspiels, and a commitment to a operate a club that fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion consistent with the welcoming ethos of their Bay Area home. And after years of ups and downs, curling finally has its first dedicated club in the Bay Area.
