QUALIFICATION PROCEDURES FOR 2023 REGIONALLY BASED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

As the 2022 USA Curling Members’ Assembly approaches, it remains USA Curling’s priority to provide as much clarity as possible to curlers planning their upcoming season.

While USA Curling cannot speculate on the outcome of the vote regarding the status of the Grand National Curling Club (GNCC) at the upcoming Assembly, both the GNCC and USA Curling must plan for either scenario as it pertains to participating curlers.

Due to the timing of the Arena National Championships relative to the Members’ Assembly, there will be GNCC teams at this event.

However, for the remaining regionally qualified Championships (2023 U18 National Championships, 2023 Club National Championships, and the 2023 Mixed Fours National Championship), qualification procedures will be dependent upon the outcome of the vote.

Regardless of the outcome of the vote, At-Large representation will be accounted for at every national championship that qualifies teams through regions.

Here is how qualification for the regionally based Championships will be impacted based on the outcome of the vote.

  • Should the USA Curling Board of Directors’ decision to remove the GNCC as a member region due to lack of compliance be ratified:

    • One (1) qualification spot will be allotted for At-Large representation at the Championships.

    • One (1) qualification spot will go to the region with the highest number of teams registered for the regional playdown.

    • Nine (9) total qualification spots will be allotted to each of the following (one per region): Alaska, Mid-America, Great Lakes, Midwest, Mountain Pacific, Dakota Territory, Pacific Northwest, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

    • One (1) qualification spot will be given to the host club.

  • Should the USA Curling Board of Directors’ decision to remove the GNCC as a member region due to lack of compliance not be ratified:

    • One (1) qualification spot will be allotted for At-Large representation at the Championships.

    • One (1) qualification spot will go to the GNCC.

USA Curling is committed to holding an At-Large playdown for these regionally qualified championships to ensure that all participants have an available pathway to reaching a National Championship.
