SEGOVIA, MYERS WIN ARENA NATIONAL TITLES

[EAGAN, MN, November 14, 2023]  — Teams from arena clubs around the nation traveled to Eveleth, MN, last weekend to compete in the 2023 Arena Curling National Championship. Curl Mesabi hosted the event for the second consecutive year, bringing in 24 teams that regularly play on multi-use arena ice.

The championship featured 12 teams per gender representing nine regions that qualified for the event through regional playdowns. Team Segovia (Julie Segovia, Alyssa Parks, Heather Cook, Jessica Oleinik, Sara Whiting) from the Curling Club of Houston won the women’s event, while Team Myers (Nick Myers, Laith Sando, Kevin Roberts, John Lambert) from the Dallas/Fort Worth Curling Club was victorious on the men’s side.  

Team Segovia finished pool play with a 4-1 record. They faced Team Feldman (Katie Feldman, Laura Lunetta, Melissa McGuire, Lee Ann Shearing) from the Wine Country Curling Club in the semifinals, winning 11-4. They went on to play Team Asis (Jennifer Asis, Melissa Wheeler, Julie Wolf, Kathalin Alsmeier, Jaclyn Pytlarz) from the Silicon Valley Curling Club in the event final. The score remained tight through six ends, but Segovia won the game 5-2 after scoring a decisive three points in the seventh end.

Team Myers advanced from pool play with a 4-1 record. The team played Team Tesch (Cale Tesch, Parker Abbott, Greg Schmitt, Stephen Spence) from the Cedar Rapids Curling Club in the semifinals, winning 11-3. They continued their strong performance in the final, winning the game 11-3 over Team Weber (Austin Weber, Mike Johnson, Nick Andrajack, Adam Craghead) from the Sioux Falls Curling Club.

“The Arena Club National Championship is such an important part of our championship schedule, giving these athletes an opportunity to compete for a national title on ice prepared by Head Ice Technician Shawn Olesen and his volunteer crew,” said CEO, Dean Gemmell. “We are also grateful for the support of Curl Mesabi, a Member Club that has put on a great event two years in a row.”

The Women’s bronze medal went to Team Schuder (Kelsey Schuder, Susan Horsman, Kaisey Ackerman, Laura Gardner) from the Curling Club of Rochester, while Team Tesch captured the won the Men’s bronze.
