On Saturday, April 23rd, Team USA opened both the World Senior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships, as well as the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland.

With teams competing in all three fields of World competition, Team USA participated in three separate draws on the opening day, resulting in a combined 3-0 record.

The senior men were the first to take the ice at Curling Club Trois-Chêne /Genève, a prestigious six-sheet curling club that neighbors the Center Sportif Sous-Moulin, an arena where the top mixed doubles nations from around the world are competing for the world title.

On the senior men’s side, the Leclair-skipped rink were the first of the three USA teams competing in Switzerland to take the ice on Saturday morning against Turkey.

Making their World Senior Men’s Curling Championship debut as a squad, the U.S. men sat tied with Turkey at the halfway mark, but established control in the second half, scoring three with hammer in the fifth before stealing two more in the sixth, resulting in a 7-3 final score.

Next door, the sibling duo of Becca and Matt Hamilton opened the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2022 with a victory over Czech Republic.

After trailing by three points, Becca Hamilton drew a piece of the button to tie the score at three points after the third end.

“We’re just learning the ice right now, and there’s a lot of games left this week,” said Becca Hamilton, acknowledging the Team’s early deficit. “So, we’re just hoping to learn off the shots we made there.”

The Hamilton siblings went on to control the remainder of the game after bouncing back from the early deficit, resulting in a 9-6 victory in mixed doubles for the U.S.

In the third and final game of the day, the U.S. Senior Women’s team, skipped by Margie Smith, established an early lead over England.

Despite not having hammer to start the matchup, the U.S forced England to a single point in the first end before scoring three, stealing two, and then stealing another single to lead 6-1 at the half.

In the second half, the U.S. forced England to another single before scoring five points in the sixth end, ultimately resulting a commanding 11-4 victory, securing a combined undefeated day at World Curling Championships for the United States.
