BECCA AND MATT HAMILTON WIN 2022 U.S. MIXED DOUBLES NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Monica Walker and Andrew Stopera faced Becca Hamilton and Matt Hamilton in the gold medal game of the 2022 U.S. Mixed Doubles National Championship at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, Wisconsin.
On Sunday at 11am, Walker/Stopera delivered the first stone of the Championship final as Hamilton/Hamilton started the game with last stone advantage due to higher playoff ranking.
Despite Hamilton/Hamilton having hammer, Walker/Stopera was the first to score, stealing one in the first end after Monica Walker completely buried the Team’s final stone into the four-foot.
Hamilton/Hamilton was quick to respond, scoring three in the second end by making a draw to the eight foot to take a 3-1 lead.
In the third end, Hamilton/Hamilton sat counting two when Walker/Stopera was forced to play a runback into the pile of stones surrounding the button. Unable to catch enough curl, Hamilton/Hamilton stole two points to extend the lead to 5-1.
Team Walker/Stopera utilized the power play in the fourth end to try to generate a multiple score and narrow the gap. The Team was successful, scoring two to only trail by two points at the close of the first half.
In the fifth end, Team Hamilton/Hamilton responded with a deuce after Becca Hamilton promoted a second red stone to outcount Walker/Stopera’s.
Hamiton/Hamilton stole one point in the sixth end and another in the seventh to extend the lead to 9-3 when Monica Walker and Andrew Stopera conceded.
In front of a hometown crowd, Becca and Matt Hamilton completed the 2022 U.S. Mixed Doubles National Championship in undefeated fashion, clinching the 2022 U.S. Mixed Doubles National Championship title.
The sibling duo will represent the United States at the 2022 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, scheduled Apr. 23-30, 2022, in Geneva, Switzerland.
