A MESSAGE FROM USA CURLING

[EDEN PRAIRIE, MN, May, 4, 2026]  USA Curling has been made aware of the recent charges against Dan Lieburn. Lieburn served as a coach and Board member with the US Junior Curling Association (USJCA).

The USJCA is an independent organization and is not an affiliate of USA Curling, and Lieburn has not been a member of USA Curling since 2022. The national organization, however, was informed of a SafeSport complaint against Lieburn in August of 2024, and immediately shared the information it had received with the USJCA. The USJCA removed him from the Board of the US Junior Curling Association and suspended him from any activity with the organization.

After investigating, SafeSport moved the complaint to Administrative Hold since Lieburn was not a member of USA Curling. This means that SafeSport would only continue the investigation if Lieburn joined the national organization. Since SafeSport had taken jurisdiction of the complaint, USA Curling did not have the legal authority to investigate further.

In addition to the USJCA, USA Curling informed Lieburn’s home club of the complaint. In discussions with them, it was determined that Lieburn was also no longer a member of the club.

The USJCA states that it requires its coaches and Board members to complete background screenings and SafeSport training—those services are offered to members of USA Curling. When the USJCA has submitted its rosters of camp coaches to USA Curling, the national organization has shared the most current information in its database on SafeSport certification and background screening. At the time of the SafeSport complaint, Lieburn had a valid Background Screen.

USA Curling does not oversee, manage, or make decisions regarding the coaches or Board members of the USJCA.

We understand these reports will raise concerns within the curling community and want to ensure all are aware of the resources that are available. Anyone wishing to report misconduct or SafeSport concerns may do so through the U.S. Center for SafeSportthrough the USA Curling website, or other appropriate reporting channels.

USA Curling is committed to creating a safe and positive environment for the physical, emotional and social development of all athletes, and to ensuring that it promotes an environment free of misconduct. Abuse or harassment of any kind is not tolerated.
