WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES ANNOUNCEMENT

[EDEN PRAIRIE, MN, June 16, 2026] — The 2027 World University Games will be held in Changchun, China from January 15th through January 25th.
In the recent past, USA Curling has held a playdown to determine a Team USA representative and funded most expenses related to this international competition. Due to the cost of travel to China and the schedule conflicts that could prevent many young teams from participating—the event overlaps with Men’s & Women’s Nationals and runs very close to the World Junior Championships—the national organization will not provide funding in 2027 for the competition or hold a playdown event. College Curling USA will take on the responsibility of determining Team USA representatives.
USA Curling CEO Dean Gemmell said, “While this has been a quality event for developing teams in the past, the timing and expense of this year’s Winter Universiade make it something we cannot take on in Year One of this quadrennial. We are grateful to College Curling USA for working to determine representatives.”
In lieu of a USA Curling playdown event, College Curling USA will choose the representatives that will compete in China. Interested teams can apply by category using the links below:
